Bio**SPOILERS FOR FULL METAL ALCHEMIST. WARNING! WARNING!**
Lieutenant Colonel Maes Hughes is one of the many "dogs of the military" in Full Metal Alchemist. Unlike most of the military, he cannot do alchemy, and the most physical fighting he ever does is throwing knives at his enemies in defense (though he managed to IMBED one into Lust's forehead! Yikes!). Even during the Ishbal War he didn't fight, but opted instead for a desk job. He lives and works in Central with his wife, Gracia, and daughter, Elicia.
If there is one thing that can be said about Hughes, it is that he is a family man. He is constantly telling people about how beautiful his wife is and how adorable his daughter is, and showing off pictures of her. He also likes to tease Roy Mustang, his best friend, about how he needs to get a wife. Hughes is easygoing and very rarely serious, making jokes even in the gravest of situations.
In both the anime and manga, Hughes was killed by the Homunculi for knowing too much about them, and about the Philosopher's Stone. However, just before Envy, disguised as his wife, shot in him the chest, he was transported to Avoria. As he didn't have any uber l33t powers of doom and stuff in the FMA world, I would assume that he wouldn't be weakened at all in Avoria.
